Always Learning . . .

Have you ever had situations where a particular word or subject keeps coming up? I’ll explain: recently in books, in 2 movies and other places the word/name Fibonacci has appeared. For those of you, including me, who don’t know what/who this is, I’ll try to explain. Several weeks ago on tv there was a movie: “Mr. Magoriam’s  Wonder Emporium” (with Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman) and in it they refer to “The Fibonacci Sequence”. Last night on tv was the movie “The DaVinci Code” . . . same thing mentioned. Today while reading a blog post on crochet – guess what popped up!? Ok, once or twice might be interesting, but over three times? Now you’ve got my attention so I proceeded to ‘check this out’. (For those of you who are Mathematical – you can skip this part) I’m going to borrow someone else’s explanation here, for the sake of simplicity: His name was Leonardo of Pisa, or Leonardo Pisano, also called Leonard Bigollo. (bigollo means traveler) He called himself Fibonacci, short for filius Bonacci.  He was born in Italy in 1170, and died in 1250. Fibonacci was a famous mathematician and wrote some well known books such as Liber abaci. Until this time people in Italy used Roman numerals. In his book he came up with a method of  counting in what now is called the current ten based (decimal) number system. His system is now called Fibonacci numbers. In the Fibonacci sequence you add two numbers to get the third in the sequence: ie:

0 + 1 = 1

Sequence: 0, 1, 1

1 + 1 = 2

Sequence: 0, 1, 1, 2

1 + 2 = 3

Sequence: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3

2 + 3 = 5

Sequence: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5

3 + 5 = 8  (and it goes on ad infinitum – ‘to infinity’)

See? Bet you didn’t think this was going to be the LEAST bit interesting, eh? Anyway, apparently you can use this system for crochet, also by deciding the placement of colors in an afghan (personally, I just use my sense of ‘color’). SO . . . all that ‘wordage’ to say that I learned something! (Never too old to learn something new, eh?) So now, if you hear or see the word/name: Fibonacci, you’ll think “Ah, I remember! It has something to do with numbers!” (anything more than that and you’re REALLY doing good!!!)

Not much new around here; have to take youngest back to hand specialist today to get his cast off and a plastic ‘temp’ removable cast given to him to wear (not exactly sure just ‘when’ he’s to use the temp cast, if not applied directly to his wrist like the original ‘plaster-type’ is now) but we’ll find out later. It’s been hot here (in the 80’s) but, typical of Michigan – it’s not just hot, it’s MUGGY!!! (for those of you who aren’t familiar with this term, think HOT AND VERY VERY humid!!!) I’ve been delaying using the air conditioning (simply because of the cost), so going to bed & waking up ‘sticky’ – sigh.

Am trying to decide if I feel ‘inspired’ to do a quick run to the grocery store before picking up youngest at 1 p.m. for doctor’s appointment; we’ll see – I’m still in my jammies and not yet in the ‘get up-get going’ mode. (Call that “Lazy”!)  Made potato salad and country spareribs for the holiday meal – my heart wasn’t in the making of the potato salad and it tasted it – kinda blah. Next time (maybe) I’ll be more creative – this time it was just hot and I wasn’t feeling the ‘Chef’ part of me jumping in to make it more tasty. Oh well – it was food (and there’s still more in the fridge – never make just a ‘small’ batch of the stuff).

Today is sunny and clear, a perfect day to get out and DO stuff; I’m sitting here fairly cool (still in my light jammies) and not feeling the “Do stuff” part yet – maybe I’ll go scrounge for some breakfast; that should ‘jump start’ my day (if I believe the tv commercials, that is!).

Enjoy your day; stay cool – and remember to SMILE some!!!

Hugs;

Pammie

Finished another afghan, crocheted several squares (just for fun), and am mid-point in another good murder mystery (an oldy: Sidney Sheldon’s “The Sky is Falling” – bought it, used, at the library sale). Afghan count: that makes #246.
